Whole-exterior planning guide

Should siding and windows be replaced together?

Learn when combining full exterior re-siding and whole-house window replacement creates a cleaner, better-integrated Eastside project.

Replacing siding and windows together is often worth considering when both systems are aging, when the exterior trim is already being rebuilt, or when the window flashing cannot be confidently tied into the existing wall assembly.

The main advantage: with the old siding removed, the window perimeter, flashing, weather barrier, trim, and siding can be detailed as one connected drainage system.

When a combined project makes sense

  • The home needs a full re-side and many windows are near the end of their useful life
  • There is leakage, rot, or repeated caulking failure around openings
  • The homeowner wants consistent window styles, grids, colors, and trim
  • Exterior trim dimensions will change with the new siding design
  • Scaffolding, access, paint, and cleanup can be coordinated once

What gets coordinated

Window selection and measurement

Frame material, operating style, glass package, color, grids, interior finish, and exterior trim should be settled before ordering.

Opening preparation

Once the existing window and surrounding materials are removed, the opening can be evaluated for damage, level, drainage, and fastening conditions.

Flashing and weather barrier

Sill, jamb, and head flashing should be layered to direct incidental water outward. The new weather barrier and siding are then integrated around the completed opening.

Trim and finish work

Exterior trim, interior returns, paint, caulking, and final operation checks need a defined scope so the project is truly complete.

When to separate the projects

Separating them can make sense when the windows are recent and performing well, the siding work is localized, or budget and timing require distinct phases. The key is to plan the future interface so today’s work does not make tomorrow’s work harder.

Questions to answer before ordering

  • Are these full-frame or insert replacements?
  • Who completes interior trim and paint?
  • How will the exterior trim meet the selected siding profile?
  • How are concealed opening repairs priced?
  • What is the ordering lead time and installation sequence?
